Gameplay uses a standard 52-card deck plus a joker. Dealings vary depending on player count (13 cards for two players, 7 for three or four). The objective? Score 500 points first by forming sets (same rank) and sequences (consecutive cards of the same suit) and laying them on the table. Jokers act as wild cards.

A player's turn begins by drawing a card from either the stockpile or the discard pile (but cannot discard the same card drawn from the discard pile). Points are awarded for melds (sets and sequences) and laying off cards onto existing melds. Numbered cards (2-10) are worth face value, royals (J, Q, K) are 10 points each, Aces are 15, and the joker's value depends on its use in a meld. At the end of a round, the total meld and layoff score is reduced by the value of unmelded cards. The highest score wins the round, with scores accumulating across rounds until a player reaches or exceeds 500. Ties result in an additional round.

500 Rum combines strategy and skill. Players must carefully use cards from the discard pile to maximize points and outmaneuver opponents. Laying off on existing melds adds another layer of strategic depth.
