Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms, Including Steam Deck Performance
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import title for PS Vita enthusiasts. The announcement of a global, multi-platform release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a genuine surprise, and after 60+ hours across various platforms, it's clear this title delivers, despite a few minor flaws.
This release marks a significant milestone for Western Gundam fans. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options, a significant improvement over previous iterations. But how does the game itself fare across different platforms?
The narrative offers a mix of engaging moments and slightly protracted dialogue. While the early chapters feel straightforward, the latter half unveils intriguing character reveals and more compelling conversations. Newcomers will find the game accessible, though the significance of certain characters might be initially unclear. (Note: Review embargo restricts discussion beyond the first two chapters.)
However, the true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies not in its story, but in its unparalleled Gunpla customization. The depth is astonishing. Players can adjust individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding), and even scale parts, allowing for truly unique creations – think Frankenstein's monster meets Gunpla!
Beyond standard parts, "builder parts" add further customization options and unique skills. Combat utilizes EX and OP skills tied to equipped parts and weapons, further enhanced by ability cartridges with various buffs and debuffs.
Mission progression involves breaking parts, earning rewards, and gathering materials to level up and enhance part rarity. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty, though higher difficulties unlock later, increasing the challenge and recommended part levels. Optional quests offer extra rewards and introduce fun game modes, such as survival mode.
Customization extends beyond parts; players can adjust paint schemes, apply decals, and even add weathering effects. The sheer depth of customization is truly impressive for Gunpla enthusiasts.
Gameplay is largely satisfying. Combat remains engaging, even on easier difficulties, with varied weapons and skill combinations. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and overcoming various obstacles. One particular boss fight proved challenging due to AI behavior, but this was an isolated incident.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Early environments feel somewhat sparse, but overall variety is decent. The focus is clearly on Gunpla models and animations, which look excellent. The art style isn't realistic, but it's effective and performs well even on lower-end hardware.
The soundtrack is a mixed bag, with some forgettable tracks and a few standouts. The lack of licensed anime music is disappointing, especially considering past DLC practices. Custom music import, a feature in other Gundam games, is also absent.
Voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese. The English dub is particularly preferable during action-packed missions.
Minor issues include a repetitive mission type (thankfully infrequent) and a few bugs. One bug prevented name saving, and others seem Steam Deck-specific (long title screen load times and a mission crash).
Online multiplayer was tested on PS5 and Switch pre-release, but PC testing was unavailable before launch due to offline servers. This will be updated once tested.
A personal anecdote: building an MG Gunpla alongside playing the game provided a unique perspective on the design and construction of these kits.
Platform Differences:
DLC: The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions offer early unlocks and Diorama content. The additional content is enjoyable but not game-breaking.
Conclusion:
Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic entry in the series. While the story is enjoyable, the true draw is the deep customization and engaging gameplay. The Steam Deck version is highly recommended, offering excellent performance and portability. The PS5 version provides superior visuals, while the Switch version, though portable, suffers from performance issues.
