The Blade Runner universe expands its reach with Titan Comics' Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, the first Blade Runner story set in Japan. IGN Fan Fest 2025 provided an exclusive interview with writers Kianna Shore and Mellow Brown, shedding light on the series' creation and unique aesthetic. The slideshow below showcases the evolution of the artwork from script to final product:

Unlike the familiar rain-soaked, neon-drenched Los Angeles of previous installments, Tokyo Nexus presents a contrasting vision of 2015 Tokyo. Shore, drawing on personal experience living in Japan, aimed for a "hopepunk" aesthetic, while Brown describes a "beautiful utopia" masking a sinister undercurrent – a "paradise" with potentially deadly consequences for disobedience.

Instead of directly referencing Akira or Ghost in the Shell, the writers drew inspiration from post-3.11 Tohoku Disaster Japanese media (Shore citing Your Name, Japan Sinks 2020, and Bubble) and contemporary Japanese society (Brown focusing on societal hopes and fears).

Tokyo Nexus, set in 2015, operates as a standalone story within the larger franchise. While containing subtle nods to the films, it's accessible to newcomers. The series builds upon previous narratives like Blade Runner: Origins and Blade Runner: 2019, exploring the Kalanthia War and Tyrell Corporation's replicant monopoly, hinting at a larger inter-organizational conflict.

Central to the narrative is the partnership between Mead, a human, and Stix, a replicant. Their bond, described as a "platonic life-partnership," forms the emotional core, showcasing their resilience and codependency amidst the harsh realities of their world.

The story unfolds amidst a conflict involving Tyrell Corp, the Yakuza, and Cheshire, a Japanese company challenging Tyrell's replicant market dominance with a new military model. Cheshire's actions, fueled by acquired Tyrell scientists, promise significant implications for the Blade Runner universe.

Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus Vol. 1 - Die in Peace is available now. You can also order the book on Amazon. IGN Fan Fest 2025 also featured previews of IDW's Godzilla shared universe and an upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog storyline.
