For those eagerly awaiting news of The Last of Us Part III, renowned series creator Neil Druckmann has delivered a significant blow to hopes of a sequel. In a recent interview with Variety, primarily focused on the The Last of Us TV series, Druckmann effectively shut down any speculation about a third installment. When questioned about the possibility, he responded with a sigh, stating, “I was waiting for this question… I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
While Druckmann's statement is certainly disheartening, it leaves room for interpretation. Naughty Dog is currently engrossed in the development of Intergalactic, a title announced at The Game Awards 2022, with no release date currently set. This suggests the studio's immediate focus is firmly on its space-faring adventure, making a Last of Us Part III project improbable in the near future. Druckmann's words might be a calculated response, a carefully chosen ambiguity, or perhaps a genuine reflection of his current intentions. Only time will tell.
However, fans still have much to look forward to. The second season of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us TV series premieres April 13th on Max. While Druckmann remains uncertain about the total number of seasons, an HBO executive hinted at a potential four-season run, offering ample opportunity to explore the narrative of Part II on the small screen.
