Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Canceled

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor

The upcoming Dynasty Warriors: Origins, slated for release on January 17, 2025, boasts a unique genesis. Omega Force, the development studio, initially embarked on creating a tenth mainline installment in the Dynasty Warriors franchise. However, this project was ultimately scrapped in favor of Origins, a decision fueled by significant technological advancements.

This cancellation wasn't a setback but a strategic pivot. The team, witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles, recognized the potential for a more modern and strategically rich gameplay experience. Elements from the abandoned Dynasty Warriors 10 were salvaged and integrated into Origins, enhancing its hack-and-slash combat within the backdrop of the Three Kingdoms era.

While Deluxe Edition players have already experienced Origins' fast-paced action, the game's core concept diverges significantly from its canceled predecessor. The abandoned title, described as a "phantom number title" by producer Masamichi Oba in an interview with 4Gamer (translated by SiliconEra), would have adhered to a stage-clearing structure reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors 7 (2011).

The decision to cancel Dynasty Warriors 10, as producer Tomohiko Sho explained, stemmed from the realization of what was achievable with cutting-edge console technology. This technological leap enabled a shift in development strategy, while simultaneously preserving valuable aspects from previous Dynasty Warriors titles.

Oba further clarified that elements from the canceled project found their way into Origins. This includes the free-roaming map feature, a concept Oba had envisioned for the abandoned game, and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms narrative. While abandoning the previous project was challenging, the team successfully integrated its best features into the current iteration, resulting in a more refined and engaging experience for players.
