IGN's Guide to Free Manga Online: Accessing Your Favorite Series Without Breaking the Bank

Here at IGN, we're huge manga fans! But with the sheer volume of titles released annually in Japan – some running for decades – staying current can be a challenge (and expensive!). Fortunately, many fantastic places offer free manga access. From classic titles like Battle Angel Alita to modern hits such as Attack on Titan, and the latest chapters of series like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Demon Slayer, we've compiled a list to help you save money while enjoying your favorite manga.

Don't forget to check out our guide to free online comics for even more options!

Hoopla

Hoopla boasts one of the internet's most diverse and extensive free manga libraries. A free library card is required, but once obtained, you'll have access to a vast collection. Highlights include the complete Berserk by Kentaro Miura, Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama, classics like Fairy Tail and Lone Wolf and Cub, and newer gems like Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. The collection includes multi-volume series, complete runs, and hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. No holds or waiting periods – everything is instantly available!

Libby

While Hoopla is a popular choice, don't overlook Libby. This app provides access to a wide range of free digital books, including manga. Availability varies by local library system, but examples from the Los Angeles Public Library include One Piece, Naruto, Spy x Family, Vampire Hunter D, My Hero Academia, and Demon Slayer. Note that, unlike Hoopla, Libby operates more like a traditional library, with limited copies per title. Place a hold to be notified when a copy becomes available.

Viz

Viz, a major English-language manga publisher, offers generous free previews (20-60 pages per volume) on its website. This includes classics like Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi, modern hits like Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto, and cult favorites like Tekkonkinkreet by Taiyō Matsumoto. A paid Viz Manga App ($2/month, 7-day free trial) offers a broader selection. The website provides free first chapters of numerous shonen titles (My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, One Punch Man, etc.) and shoujo titles (Maison Ikkoku, Skip・Beat!, etc.).

Shonen Jump

Another Viz offering, the Shonen Jump app provides free chapters without a paid subscription ($3/month option available). Unlike many free services, it often includes the latest chapters of popular manga, making it ideal for staying current. Titles include One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kaiju No. 8, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Kodansha

Kodansha, a renowned manga publisher, offers free first volumes or chapters of many titles via a free Kodansha Reader account. This includes classics like Sailor Moon, Attack on Titan, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Akira, along with newer hits such as Vinland Saga and Blue Lock. The K MANGA app offers additional options, though it has a daily chapter limit and a point system for additional reading.

MANGA Plus by Shueisha

From Shueisha, Japan's largest publisher, MANGA Plus provides free chapters from popular Weekly Shonen Jump titles, including Chainsaw Man, Spy X Family, Choujin X, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. While full series and simulcast releases require payment, the free selection offers a great way to sample new series.

Amazon

Amazon offers a smaller selection of free manga, often including first chapters or shorter works. Check for free titles and publisher previews. Kindle Unlimited subscribers have access to a much larger selection. Amazon also offers frequent discounts on manga.
