Black Myth: Wukong – Early Impressions and Controversy

After a four-year wait since its 2020 announcement, Black Myth: Wukong is finally here (at least on PC). Initial reviews paint a largely positive picture, with the game currently boasting an 82 Metascore on Metacritic based on 54 critic reviews.

The consensus praises the game's exceptional action gameplay, emphasizing precise and engaging combat enhanced by brilliantly designed boss fights. Stunning visuals and hidden secrets within its richly detailed world further contribute to its appeal. The game's interpretation of the classic Chinese mythology tale, Journey to the West, has also garnered significant praise, with GamesRadar+ describing it as "a fun action RPG that feels like the modern God of War games viewed through the lens of Chinese mythology."

However, PCGamesN's review, while highlighting its Game of the Year potential, notes some potential drawbacks, including subpar level design, uneven difficulty, and occasional technical glitches. The narrative structure, similar to older FromSoftware titles, is also cited as a point of contention, requiring players to actively seek out contextual information within item descriptions to fully grasp the story. Importantly, all early access reviews are currently based on the PC version; console performance remains unassessed.

Controversy Surrounds Review Guidelines

A recent controversy emerged concerning guidelines reportedly issued by one of Black Myth: Wukong's co-publishers to streamers and reviewers. These guidelines allegedly restricted discussion of topics including violence, nudity, feminist themes, and anything deemed to promote negative discourse. This has sparked considerable debate online, with some criticizing the restrictions as censorship while others expressed less concern.

Despite this controversy, the game's pre-release hype remains substantial. Steam sales statistics currently place it as both the best-selling and most wishlisted game on the platform. While the lack of console reviews might temper expectations for some, Black Myth: Wukong is poised for a significant launch.
