IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Finally Gets the Brothers Back Together – IGN Fan Fest 2025

by Noah Mar 05,2025

IDW's ambitious Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise expansion continues in 2025. Following the successful relaunch of the flagship comic under Jason Aaron in 2024, and the launch of TMNT: The Last Ronin sequel and TMNT x Naruto crossover, the main TMNT series now features a new artist and storyline. The Turtles are reunited, but their relationships are strained.

IGN Fan Fest 2025 interviews with Aaron and TMNT x Naruto writer Caleb Goellner revealed insights into the franchise's direction.

The TMNT Mission Statement:

Aaron's approach focuses on revisiting the grit and grime of the original Mirage Studios comics, aiming for a blend of classic feel and contemporary storytelling. He sought to capture the essence of the original black and white art style while advancing the characters' arcs after 150 issues of the IDW series. The story explores the Turtles' diverging paths and their eventual reunion to confront a significant threat. The success of TMNT #1, selling approximately 300,000 copies, suggests a strong audience demand for reboots and streamlined franchises. Aaron attributes the success to a focus on creating engaging stories rather than market trends.

A TMNT Family Reunion:

The initial arc saw the Turtles scattered globally, each facing unique challenges. Their eventual reunion in New York City, however, reveals fractured relationships and a city weaponized against them. The arrival of Juan Ferreyra as the regular artist for issue #6 onwards provides a consistent visual style, perfectly complementing the storyline.

Merging TMNT and Naruto:

Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya's TMNT x Naruto crossover seamlessly integrates the two universes. Prasetya's redesigns of the Turtles are highly praised, making them feel natural within the Naruto world. Goellner highlights the enjoyable character interactions, particularly Kakashi's role as a mentor figure, and the dynamic between Raphael and Sakura. A major TMNT villain, specifically requested by Masashi Kishimoto, will feature prominently in the storyline.
