NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans

NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing mods. The company explicitly stated that any modification of the game, regardless of whether it's cosmetic or provides gameplay advantages, violates the game's terms of service and risks a permanent ban.

This announcement follows the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which introduced new content including the Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic. Despite attempts to prevent modding through Season 1's updates (which involved checking asset hashes), workarounds have emerged. One such workaround, detailed by IGN, allows players to bypass the anti-modding measures. The creator of this workaround, Prafit, acknowledges the risk of account bans associated with using the mod. Another mod, transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, further highlights the modding activity.

While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards modifications, cheats, and hacks. Although some mods have been removed from platforms like Nexus Mods, Prafit's workaround remains available, showcasing the ongoing challenge in combating modding.

Despite past instances of erroneous bans, NetEase Games has clearly defined the consequences of violating the terms of service. The future actions of NetEase Games regarding modding remain to be seen. The situation underscores the ongoing tension between developers' efforts to maintain game integrity and the creativity (and potential risks) of the modding community.
