Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage, in a passionate Saturn Awards acceptance speech, decried the use of artificial intelligence in acting, warning that allowing AI to influence performances leads actors down "a dead end." As reported by Variety, Cage, accepting the Best Actor award for his role in Dream Scenario, leveraged the platform to express his strong concerns.

He stated that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition, a crucial element of compelling performances. He argued that any actor who allows AI to manipulate their performance, even slightly, compromises the integrity and authenticity of their art, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic truth.

Cage emphasized the vital role of art in mirroring the human experience through genuine emotional and intellectual processes, a task he believes AI is fundamentally incapable of achieving. He warned that allowing AI to dictate artistic expression would result in soulless, uninspired work, devoid of genuine human connection and response. He urged his fellow actors to resist AI's encroachment on their creative process.

Cage's stance echoes similar concerns expressed by other actors, particularly within the voice acting industry, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in high-profile video games. Actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have publicly voiced their opposition, highlighting the financial implications of AI replacing human actors.

The film industry itself is also divided on the issue. While director Tim Burton expressed alarm at AI-generated art, Zack Snyder advocates for embracing the technology rather than resisting it.
