The Toxic Avenger Is Back, and He's Teaming Up With... Jesus Christ?

by Anthony Mar 05,2025

AHOY Comics' 2024 revival of cult hero The Toxic Crusader continues this year with "Toxic Mess Summer," a crossover event uniting Toxie with AHOY's diverse roster of heroes—including Jesus Christ.

The summer kicks off in May with The Toxic Avenger Pinup Special, showcasing various artists' interpretations of Toxie and his world. This is followed by the Toxie Team-Up miniseries, pairing Toxie with an eclectic cast: the Jersey Devil (from Project: Cryptid), Acid Chimp (My Bad), Dragonflyman and Stinger (The Wrong Earth), Swamp Cop and Schitt (Justice Warriors), and, notably, Jesus Christ from Second Coming.

For the uninitiated, Second Coming depicts Jesus' return to Earth and his unlikely roommate, Sunstar. The series has generated significant attention, and this unlikely alliance with Toxie is sure to continue that trend.

Toxie Team-Up #1 is written and illustrated by Mark Russell and Richard Pace, the creative team behind Second Coming. Russell commented in AHOY's press release, stating the collaboration was a natural fit, highlighting Christ's approach beyond violence and finding common ground with Toxie's Tromaville setting.

AHOY Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer emphasized The Toxic Avenger's pop culture status, playfully questioning his lack of a dedicated church.

Release dates: The Toxic Avenger Pinup Special on May 14th, Toxie Team-Up #1 on June 11th, and a trade paperback collection of Matt Bors and Fred Harper's The Toxic Avenger miniseries on April 1st. Pre-orders are available on Amazon.

Toxie's cinematic return is also slated for 2025. IGN's review of the 2023 Toxic Avenger film, penned by Amelia Emberwing, describes it as a mixed bag, acknowledging the increased budget but noting a departure from the original's schlocky charm. However, it praises the film's heart, practical effects, and the performances of Kevin Bacon and Peter Dinklage.
