Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Stamps Out Live Service Game Talk Amid Backlash to 'FOMO' Community Events

by Riley Mar 05,2025

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developers address "FOMO" concerns regarding community events. Following player backlash over limited-time cosmetic unlock events, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive clarified their intentions, stating they are not aiming for a full live-service model.

The controversy stemmed from community events designed to unlock cosmetic items, prompting accusations of employing "fear of missing out" (FOMO) tactics—a common criticism of live-service games that often utilize limited-time offers to drive in-game spending. While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, these events generated negative feedback due to their perceived pressure to acquire items quickly.

In response, the developers assured players that all event-exclusive cosmetic items will become available to everyone later. Their official statement emphasized a desire for community events to reward dedicated players with early access, not create frustration. They acknowledged the current system's flaws and pledged to simplify the item unlock process.

As a gesture of goodwill, the developers are offering the Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through the Imperial Vigil community event) for free to all players who link their Focus Entertainment PROS account to the game. This event concludes on March 3rd.

The upcoming 7.0 update is anticipated to alleviate some concerns, introducing a new weapon, Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. This follows earlier communication addressing player frustration regarding content scarcity and outlining a content roadmap for the coming months.

Space Marine 2's success is undeniable, having achieved record-breaking sales figures, surpassing 5 million copies sold and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever.
