Saw XI 'Stalled at a Managerial Level' Due to Lionsgate and Producer Tensions

by Benjamin Mar 19,2025

It's official: the Saw franchise is on hold, at least for now. The upcoming Saw XI, originally slated for a fall release, has been indefinitely stalled. This isn't a creative roadblock, according to screenwriter Patrick Melton, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter. Melton stated that the issue stems from managerial disagreements between producers and Lionsgate, with no creative concerns hindering progress. He and writing partner Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft nearly a year ago, in Spring 2024, but the project remains stalled due to high-level internal conflicts.

PlayKevin Gruetert, a frequent director in the franchise, was attached to the project in December 2023, initially targeting a September 2024 release. The delay to September 2025 disappointed fans, especially after *Saw X*'s box office success ($120 million globally). This success fueled anticipation for *Saw XI*.

The eleventh installment was poised to tackle a timely and relevant theme. While plot details remain under wraps, Melton hinted at similarities to Saw VI, which he and Dunstan wrote and Gruetert directed. Saw VI focused on Jigsaw's revenge against health insurance executives. Melton expressed hope that Saw XI will eventually see the light of day, highlighting its timely and relevant narrative. He described it as tapping into the same themes as Saw VI: citizen frustration and anger, a feeling of helplessness, and Jigsaw stepping in to take action. Whether this timely story will ever reach audiences remains uncertain.
