Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a fascinating chapter in the evolution of bridge card games. As the third step in the development of bridge, these games emerged from the foundation laid by straight bridge, also known as bridge whist, and served as a precursor to the well-known contract bridge. Their roots trace back even further to the classic game of whist.

In Auction Bridge & IB, the methods of scoring tricks, bonuses, and penalties differ significantly from those in contract bridge. Notably, there is no concept of vulnerability, which adds a unique strategic layer to the game. While the selection of trumps follows a similar procedure to contract bridge, the process is less complex in Auction Bridge & IB. The gameplay and rules also share similarities with contract bridge, ensuring a familiar yet distinct experience for bridge enthusiasts.

The game begins with the dealer who initiates the trump selection and must commit to winning at least the odd trick in a chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. The bidding escalates based on the number of points bid rather than the number of tricks, adding a nuanced approach to the game. For example, a bid of 3 Spades, which scores 27 points, would outrank a bid of 4 Clubs, which scores only 24 points.

Scoring in Auction Bridge & IB is as follows for each trick beyond the first six:

• No-trumps: 10 points
• Spades: 9 points
• Hearts: 8 points
• Diamonds: 7 points
• Clubs: 6 points

Achieving a game requires a total of 30 points.
