El sorpresivo cambio de liderazgo llega con mínimas explicaciones por parte de Krafton, empresa matriz de Unknown Worlds y editora de PUBG. Aunque reconoce los esfuerzos por mantener la participación de los creadores originales de Subnautica, Krafton simplemente declaró que "les desea lo mejor en sus próximos proyectos" sin entrar en más detalles.
Krafton enfatizó que Papoutsis se centrará en el "impulso del desarrollo y ofrecer la mejor experiencia posible para los fans", con el objetivo de aportar "energía renovada" al proyecto. Sin embargo, el cambio plantea dudas sobre cómo esta transición repentina podría afectar el lanzamiento programado de Subnautica 2.
Cleveland y McGuire cofundaron Unknown Worlds hace casi 25 años, mientras que Gill se unió como presidente en 2017 antes de convertirse en CEO en agosto de 2024. Aunque sus perfiles de LinkedIn aún los muestran como empleados del estudio, lo que sugiere una transición abrupta.
