Krafton replaces Subnautica 2 team for fresh vision

by Gabriel Oct 11,2025

Former Striking Distance CEO Steve Papoutsis is stepping into a new role as CEO at Unknown Worlds Entertainment, developer of Subnautica 2, following the abrupt departure of the studio's previous leadership team—Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire—effective immediately.

The surprise leadership change comes with minimal explanation from Krafton, Unknown Worlds' parent company and publisher of PUBG. While acknowledging efforts to maintain involvement from Subnautica’s original creators, Krafton simply stated it "wishes them well on their next endeavors" without elaborating further.

Krafton emphasized that Papoutsis will focus on "development momentum and delivering the best possible fan experience," aiming to bring "renewed energy" to the project. However, the switch raises questions about how this sudden turnover may impact Subnautica 2's scheduled release.

Cleveland and McGuire co-founded Unknown Worlds nearly 25 years ago, while Gill joined as president in 2017 before becoming CEO in August 2024. Though LinkedIn profiles still list them as employed by the studio, suggesting an abrupt transition.

"There is nothing more important than the gamer experience," stated CH Kim, Krafton’s CEO. "Given the anticipation around Subnautica 2, we owe our players nothing less than the best possible game, as soon as possible."

Kim added, "We’re thrilled Steve is joining us in our commitment to deliver Subnautica 2 as a more complete and satisfying entry—one that truly meets fan expectations."

Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds in October 2021, originally pledging that the studio would remain independently operated while leveraging Krafton’s publishing strength.

The next Subnautica installment introduces multiplayer support for up to four players, transporting them to an uncharted alien planet brimming with new biomes, creatures, and mysteries. While an exact launch date remains unconfirmed, the diving adventure is slated for a late 2025 release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass.

The franchise has consistently impressed critics—we awarded the original Subnautica a stellar 9.1, praising its "underwater horror" and gripping sci-fi survival elements. Its sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero, maintained momentum with another outstanding 9/10 in our IGN review.
