"Amazon Axes 'Wheel of Time' After Three Seasons, Story Incomplete"

by Lucas May 24,2025

The Wheel of Time has come to an abrupt halt on Prime Video after Amazon decided to cancel the series post-Season 3. According to Deadline, the decision came after "lengthy deliberations," with executives appreciating the show but unable to justify its financial viability.

Based on Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy book series, The Wheel of Time features a stellar cast led by Rosamund Pike. The initial two seasons faced criticism from fans due to significant deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win over a majority of the fanbase, setting the stage for potentially stronger future seasons.

PlayThe cancellation has left fans disheartened, especially considering how much of The Wheel of Time's epic tale remains untold. Just as the series was hitting its stride, financial considerations led to its demise. The high production costs, shared between co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter also behind the pricey The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power—proved too burdensome.

Deadline highlighted that "the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said."

IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, noting: "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."

Despite the end of the TV series, fans can look forward to a new 'AAA Open-World RPG' in development. IGN interviewed iwot Studios, the rights holder for The Wheel of Time, to delve deeper into this exciting project.
