Borderlands 4 is set to elevate the franchise’s legendary weapon system with bold new innovations. Discover how the game expands on its iconic arsenal and learn how fans can claim an exclusive free in-game weapon skin before launch.

The Borderlands series has always been defined by its wildly creative and unpredictable weapon ecosystem, and Gearbox is pushing the boundaries even further in Borderlands 4. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Executive Producer Chris Brock emphasized that while the previous entries delivered an exceptional gun experience, the upcoming title introduces more room for surprise and deeper customization.
“The way we've done guns before is great, but with the way we're doing it now, there's more opportunity for surprise,” Brock explained. A standout addition is the new “licensed parts” feature, which allows weapons to inherit unique behaviors and traits from different manufacturers—even if they aren’t the original maker. This means a Maliwan barrel on a Vladof frame could create a hybrid weapon with electrifying effects and high burst fire, opening up unprecedented combinations.
The series’ hallmark remains: each weapon brand brings its own distinct identity and mechanics, helping players quickly identify and specialize in gear that fits their playstyle.

Borderlands 4 introduces three fresh manufacturers—Order, Ripper, and Daedalus—each bringing unique design philosophies and combat flavors to the mix. Fan favorites like Jakobs, Maliwan, Tediore, Torque, and Vladof are also returning, ensuring a mix of nostalgia and novelty. However, some brands such as COV and Hyperion have been retired—reflecting the narrative consequences of their fallen leaders from previous games.
With Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands boasting over a billion unique guns, Gearbox is committed to building an even more expansive arsenal. In a conversation with GamesRadar+ on February 1, Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson confirmed the team’s ongoing dedication to weapon innovation.
“We’re always adding more guns, more manufacturers, more legendary weapons, and more opportunities for customization and player expression,” Nicholson said. “Borderlands 4 will feature billions of weapons and accessories for players to discover and master.”

Fans eager to jump into the chaos can get a head start with a free in-game reward. Gearbox announced on Steam on June 28 that players who subscribe to official newsletters and digital marketing communications via their SHiFT account will receive the Hazard Pay Weapon Skin at launch.
To secure the skin, players must:
Additionally, special SHiFT codes may appear in official Borderlands emails, offering bonus rewards and early access perks.

Despite recent discussions around the game’s pricing strategy, Borderlands 4 continues to build momentum with exciting post-launch plans, including the addition of a photo mode as a free update and a fresh comedic tone that balances the game’s darker, more serious world.
Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates and exclusive content—your arsenal awaits.
