Borderlands 4 will implement its photo mode feature through a post-launch update. Discover what other enhancements developers are planning alongside the game's official story trailer details.
Borderlands 4 will include a photo mode, though players will need to wait for a subsequent update to access it. Creative Director Graeme Timmins explained via Twitter (X) on June 25 that while initially planned for launch, the feature was temporarily deprioritized to focus on core gameplay refinements.
Timmins elaborated: "We redirected resources to polish more fundamental aspects affecting the immediate player experience. The photo mode remains on our roadmap - we simply needed extra development time for features impacting gameplay quality."
This follows Borderlands 3's 2019 implementation, where photo mode launched with the PC version before coming to consoles. The development team has incorporated community feedback from previous titles into their planning.
In another community-driven update, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced on June 20 the last-minute addition of a combat radar feature. This optional assist tool provides battlefield awareness by marking enemy positions, though it defaults to disabled in the settings menu.
Pitchford emphasized the value of fan contributions, thanking players for "thoughtful suggestions that genuinely improve the game through constructive feedback."
During June 21's Borderlands Fan Fest, Gearbox and 2K Games unveiled a narrative trailer establishing the game's setting and premise. The two-minute preview follows Vault Hunters' rebellion against The Timekeeper's tyrannical rule over planet Kairos.
Players will ally with Claptrap and the Crimson Resistance to overthrow the oppressive regime through resource gathering and tactical alliances. The trailer signals a tonal shift from previous installments - dialing back humor for a grittier portrayal of resistance against authoritarian control.

Moving beyond Borderlands 3's meme-heavy approach, the fourth installment presents more grounded storytelling while maintaining the franchise's signature style. This evolution responds to the game's dystopian setting where actions carry weightier consequences.
Borderlands 4 launches September 12, 2025 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms. For continuous updates on the game's development, explore our related coverage below.
