Nintendo Switch 2 Secondhand Buyers Warned of Anti-Piracy Bricks

by Joseph Dec 27,2025

Nintendo fans are advising caution when purchasing a pre-owned Switch 2 due to the company's updated anti-piracy measures, warning that unsuspecting buyers could end up with a console permanently restricted from online access.

Earlier reports this month indicated that Nintendo appears to be blocking all online features on Switch 2 consoles previously used with the MIG Switch flash card—a device designed for running unofficial game copies.

This permanent restriction triggers error code 2124-4508 whenever online functions are accessed. Affected consoles cannot download or play digital games or Game-Key cartridges, receive system or game updates, participate in online multiplayer, use GameChat, or access any Nintendo Switch Online services—including the classic games library available to subscribers.

Since most buyers expect full online functionality, it’s concerning that one user has already reported purchasing a discounted pre-owned Switch 2 only to discover it had been banned.

Reddit user Bimmytung shared their experience buying a used Switch 2 from Walmart, noting they inspected the box in-store and found everything in order physically.

"Physically, everything looked fine and complete," Bimmytung explained. "I noticed the Mario Kart code had been scratched off, which made me suspect the original owner redeemed it and then returned the system. They discounted it by $50, so I decided to take a chance—at least I’d have the hardware. I also bought a Pro Controller 2 while I was there.

"Once I got home and tried to finish the setup, I immediately saw Error Code 2124-4508. A quick online search confirmed my worst fears. Thankfully, my local Walmart accepted the return without any issues, but still… I have nothing but intense disdain for the person who pulled this off."

Found one. Didn't end well.

As awareness grows regarding the risks associated with the MIG Switch card—and as Nintendo continues to ban more consoles—it’s likely that more affected devices will appear on platforms like eBay or in secondhand stores.

To avoid purchasing a banned system, fans suggest that anyone buying a used Switch 2 should request proof that the console can still access online services and seek assurance that the previous owner never used a MIG Switch, reducing the risk of being caught in a future ban wave.

Back in May, ahead of the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo updated its Nintendo Account Agreement to clarify that using unauthorized hardware or software to alter the service’s intended operation could result in permanent restrictions on the Nintendo Account Services and/or the affected Nintendo device.

Even so, the speed at which Nintendo began banning consoles after MIG Switch usage surprised many Switch 2 owners, who found their newly acquired devices locked out of online features almost instantly.

IGN previously reached out to Nintendo for details about these bans but did not receive a response. We have also asked the company what affected customers should do if they purchase a banned pre-owned Switch 2, whether Nintendo plans to acknowledge the situation and lift any bans, and if guidance will be provided to retailers that handle used consoles to prevent further issues.
