ByteDance Shifts US Publishing to Skystone in Major Restructuring

by Eric Mar 29,2025

One of the most significant developments in the mobile gaming industry this year has been the shift of several popular games like Marvel Snap and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang to a new publisher. In the United States, ByteDance has ceased publishing these titles, and Skystone Games has stepped in to take over, promising new region-specific versions tailored for American players.

The initial catalyst for this change was the proposed TikTok ban, which led to ByteDance's decision to voluntarily offline the app. However, the repercussions extended beyond social media, impacting a range of top mobile games. These games were abruptly removed from app stores, often without any forewarning to the development teams or the gaming community. The political pressure on ByteDance to divest from its social media platform played a significant role in these sudden changes.

Although TikTok has since returned, the same cannot be said for all affected games. Marvel Snap, for instance, was quick to find a new publisher in Skystone Games, which now manages virtually all of ByteDance's US-published titles. This move ensures that players can continue enjoying these games, either in their original form or through specially adapted US versions.

While this news is certainly a relief for gamers, it underscores a troubling trend where mobile games become entangled in political disputes. The idea that our favorite games could be treated as political bargaining chips is unsettling for everyone involved.

As the deadline for a potential TikTok sale approaches, we may see further political maneuvering that impacts apps and, by extension, games. The precedent set by this situation could have far-reaching implications for the future of mobile gaming and how companies navigate similar challenges.
