Catch and Evolve Bagon in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

by Christopher Feb 25,2025

This guide details how to obtain Bagon, Shelgon, and Salamence in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Bagon, a Dragon-type Pokémon evolving into the powerful Salamence, is exclusive to Pokémon Violet. This guide covers finding Bagon in Violet, transferring it to Scarlet, evolution methods, and Salamence's battle viability.

Locating Bagon in Pokémon Violet:

Several locations yield Bagon encounters:

  • East Province (Area Three): This expansive area, rich in explorable caves, offers high chances of finding Bagon.
  • South Province (Area Five): A fixed Bagon spawn exists atop a mountain southwest of the bridge connecting the grassy and rocky regions.
  • Dalizapa Passage: Located north of the Great Crater and south of Glaseado Mountain, this area features a deep cavern accessible by Koraidon/Miraidon, containing Bagon and other rare Pokémon.
  • 3-Star Tera Raids: Once you've earned three Gym Badges, participate in 3-star Tera Raids for a chance to encounter Bagon (Tera Type may vary). These raids may offer Bagon with its Hidden Ability.

Acquiring Bagon in Pokémon Scarlet:

Since Bagon is Violet-exclusive, trading or Pokémon HOME transfer is necessary:

  • Trading: Utilize the Union Circle to trade with a Pokémon Violet player. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features.
  • Pokémon HOME: Transfer Bagon from compatible games (Sword/Shield, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, etc.) to your Scarlet game via Pokémon HOME. Instructions:
    1. Move Bagon to your HOME Basic Box.
    2. Open your Pokémon Scarlet game and transfer Bagon from the HOME Basic Box to a Scarlet PC Box.

Evolving Bagon:

  • Bagon to Shelgon: Level Bagon up to level 30.
  • Shelgon to Salamence: Level Shelgon up to level 50. Utilize auto-battling against appropriate-level Pokémon (like Chansey for efficient EXP gain) or Exp. Candy for faster evolution. 4-star and 5/6-star Tera Raids also offer chances to obtain Shelgon and Salamence respectively.

Salamence's Battle Prowess:

Salamence, a Dragon/Flying pseudo-legendary (600 base stat total), is a formidable Pokémon.

Salamence Stats

  • Stats: High Attack and Speed make it a physical attacker.
  • Typing: Super effective against Dragon, but weak to Ice (x4), Fairy, Dragon, and Rock. Resists Grass, Water, Fire, Fighting, and Bug; immune to Ground.
  • Recommended Natures: Adamant (+Attack, -Special Attack) or Lonely (+Attack, -Defense) for physical sets; Timid (+Speed, -Attack) for special sets.
  • Recommended Moves: Dragon Claw, Iron Head (TM099), and other physical moves for a physical set; Draco Meteor, Flamethrower, and other special moves for a special set.

This comprehensive guide ensures you can add the powerful Salamence to your Pokémon Scarlet and Violet team. Remember to adapt your strategy based on whether you build Salamence as a physical or special attacker.
