Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

by Riley Mar 14,2025

The wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement – potentially "any day now." This exciting news was shared during a recent interview with Business Insider.

While details remain scarce regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working on the project. He described the game as offering players a unique experience: "They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria."

Willingham, a prominent actor and Critical Role star, co-founded the company alongside other renowned voice actors, including Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its inception, Critical Role has expanded into a multifaceted entertainment universe, notably with its successful Amazon Prime Video spinoff, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will stand alongside Critical Role's other projects, though it won't necessarily be directly tied to them. In December 2024, Willingham told Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, stating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." Whether the game will follow one of the show's existing campaigns or present an original story within the Exandria setting remains to be seen.

While an announcement was initially anticipated before the end of 2024 or early 2025, the possibility of an imminent reveal is now highly likely. Willingham's previous comments to Rolling Stone highlighted the team's careful approach to entering the interactive entertainment market: “Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels… There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem.”

No release date has been announced for the Critical Role video game. In the meantime, fans can look forward to further updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
