Devil May Cry's Shankar: Season 2 a Drastic Reboot

by Carter Nov 07,2025

Opinions on Netflix's Devil May Cry: The Animated Series may vary, but creator Adi Shankar recently confirmed that Season 2 will be notably different from the first season. If the initial run didn't quite click with you, it might be worth another look.

"Season 2 is a very different show. Yes, Dante levels up," the Dredd producer responded to a fan on Twitter on June 23. "His abilities sharpen, and you’ll see him embody more of the iconic flair that game fans expect. Still, I'm telling a story—great characters don't just win; they evolve. Dante’s appeal lies not in being unbeatable, but in his capacity to learn and grow stronger."

That said, some fans in the replies voiced dissatisfaction with how the Capcom-based series has unfolded. One user offered sharp insight into why the show hasn't met some viewers' expectations.

"It's not just about growth, but how they grow. People aren't angry because Dante isn't instantly incredible," the Twitter user elaborated. "They're upset because the core of his journey—and Lady's, for that matter—was misunderstood."

One key point remains: Shankar's adaptation is not bound by canonical constraints, allowing creative freedom.

"Every franchise is unique," he explained to another fan regarding game adaptations. "It depends on the IP. With Devil May Cry, the continuity across games, manga, and other media was already dense and conflicting—so going non-canon and crafting my own alternate universe let me honor the spirit of the series without being constrained by timeline complexities."

Devil May Cry Season 2 has not yet announced a release date, but the series was officially renewed in April.

IGN rated Devil May Cry Season 1 an 8/10, calling it "a fun, if somewhat predictable, video game adaptation that features one of the year's best animated episodes."
