Nintendo has given us our first official glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. In a recent video released via the Nintendo Today app, the company showcased the new official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to securely hold up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, allowing the new console to utilize a single cartridge slot for games from both Switch generations. However, there's a noticeable difference: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be standard across all games, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. You can view the video on the Nintendo Today app or through OatmealDome's post on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge's label also sports the new Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Nintendo Switch design. Here's a closer look at the official Switch 2 carrying case, which includes space for the console with attached Joy-Con 2, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. It's no surprise that the Switch 2 cartridges are the same size as those for the Switch 1.

Aside from the color change, Switch 2 cartridges are virtually identical to the original, including the notorious foul-tasting coating that Nintendo uses to prevent players from putting the cartridges in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," said Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
