HBO Reportedly in Final Talks With John Lithgow to Play Dumbledore in Harry Potter Series

by Lucas Feb 25,2025

HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in its upcoming Harry Potter series.

While Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal, HBO remains tight-lipped, refusing to confirm the casting. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore role. An HBO spokesperson stated, "We understand the significant interest in this project and the resulting speculation. As pre-production continues, we will only confirm details upon finalizing agreements."

Lithgow's extensive credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown.

Despite various reports of casting progress, HBO remains secretive about the full cast. The search for actors to portray Harry, Hermione, and Ron is ongoing, although Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films, a decision possibly influenced by J.K. Rowling's "significant involvement" in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, in-depth telling of the novels, surpassing the limitations of the film series. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) are attached to direct and write.
