Helldivers 2 just dropped a fresh trailer for its upcoming Xbox release, and sharp-eyed viewers quickly spotted a subtle reference to Halo tucked into the closing moments.

The trailer opened with a mix of cinematic visuals and explosive gameplay before appearing to wrap up with the standard release date and pre-order information screen.

Then, in an unexpected shift, the final seconds hold on a quiet, shadowy shot of Super Earth as a lone Hellpod touches down. Here, the usual explosive "Boom" is replaced by the distinct, somber saxophone melody of "Rain" from Halo 3: ODST—a track well-known to dedicated Halo fans.

It's worth noting that Halo 3: ODST, released in 2009, was the first game in the series where players took on the role of standard space marines rather than the iconic Master Chief, making its thematic connection to Helldivers particularly strong. The similarities have long sparked fan speculation about a possible crossover, even before this trailer.

While a number of Xbox-exclusive titles have come to PlayStation systems, Helldivers 2 will be the first major PlayStation exclusive to launch on Xbox. If this collaboration materializes, it would mark a significant moment of partnership between these historically competing companies.

The only previous PlayStation title to appear on Xbox was MLB The Show in 2021, though that was a unique case driven by Major League Baseball's goal to reach a wider audience. MLB Advanced Media co-published the Xbox version, despite the game originally being distributed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

This isn't the first time characters from Xbox and PlayStation universes have met. Epic Games' Fall Guys previously featured both Ratchet & Clank and Halo’s Master Chief, while Fortnite saw the Spartan hero share the screen with God of War’s Kratos. Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves also collaborated with Destiny 2 earlier this year, though Bungie’s title was already on Xbox before Sony acquired the studio.

With Sony consistently bringing its exclusives to PC and Microsoft breaking down barriers between gaming platforms, this move feels like another step toward ending the long-standing console rivalry. Now, all that remains is for Nintendo to join in.
