Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library

by Gabriella May 16,2025

Killer Instinct Gold is the latest addition to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the excitement of the classic Nintendo 64 game to subscribers of the Online Expansion Pack. This title is a port of the arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2, complementing the original Killer Instinct already available in the retro game collection.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was developed by the renowned British studio Rare, which was a key second-party developer for Nintendo during that era. Rare's portfolio includes iconic games such as Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a roster of 10 fierce fighters and engage in various game modes, boasting "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Now under the ownership of Microsoft, the Killer Instinct franchise continues to expand its reach, with Killer Instinct Gold joining other Xbox Game Studios titles on the Nintendo Switch. Since the release of the Xbox One launch title Killer Instinct in 2013, there have been no announcements regarding a new sequel to the series.

Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription service that enhances the gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch platform. It offers online multiplayer capabilities, allowing players to connect and play with friends, alongside a vast collection of classic Nintendo games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon, the new GameCube libraries with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. A free seven-day trial is available for those interested in exploring the service.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 began at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The demand was overwhelming, leading Nintendo to issue a warning to U.S. customers who preordered from the My Nintendo Store that release date delivery might not be guaranteed. However, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, expressed confidence to IGN that the company would have sufficient units to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
