Killzone Composer Questions Series' Future: 'People Want Casual, Quick Games'

by Eleanor Mar 27,2025

The beloved Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a long hiatus, but recent conversations are sparking hope among fans. In an insightful interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone's composer, Joris de Man, expressed his desire to see the iconic series make a comeback. "I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man shared, acknowledging the fanbase's eagerness. He cautiously added, "I think it's tricky because I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

When considering the potential revival, de Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more appealing to fans than a completely new entry. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he remarked. He noted the evolving tastes of gamers, suggesting that the slower-paced, weightier gameplay of Killzone might not align with the current demand for more casual, fast-paced experiences. Killzone 2, in particular, faced criticism for its perceived input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected its responsiveness. The series is known for its dark, gritty atmosphere, contrasting sharply with more contemporary, lighter shooter games.

Recent statements from Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, indicate a shift in focus towards the Horizon series, as mentioned in their interview with the Washington Post. Despite this, it's been over a decade since the release of Killzone Shadow Fall, and the prospect of reviving this classic PlayStation shooter franchise continues to excite many fans. While the future remains uncertain, supporters of Killzone can take comfort in knowing they have allies, including Joris de Man, advocating for its return.
