Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Is a 'Jerk' In James Gunn's Upcoming Superman: 'You Don't Have To Be Good'

James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot introduces a new take on Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Fillion describes his portrayal as a departure from previous iterations, emphasizing Gardner's less-than-charming personality. "He's a jerk!" Fillion revealed. He clarifies that a Green Lantern doesn't need to be good, just fearless, and Gardner embodies that fearlessness with a healthy dose of selfishness. This lack of virtue, Fillion explains, provides creative freedom for his performance, allowing him to explore the character's self-serving motivations. Gardner's overconfidence, bordering on hubris, is even highlighted as a potential superpower—though one he misuses, believing he could take on Superman (which, Fillion points out, he can't).

This Superman film kicks off the new DC Universe's "Gods and Monsters" chapter. While the film focuses on this new cinematic universe, the Green Lantern saga continues on HBO Max with the Lanterns series, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, slated for a 2026 premiere.

The Superman film itself stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Written and directed by James Gunn, the film is set for release on July 11, 2025.
