Nintendo Addresses Switch 2 Battery Issue, Provides Solution

A battery indicator issue reported by some Nintendo Switch 2 owners has now been acknowledged by Nintendo. Fortunately, the company has provided a set of steps that may offer a quick and effective fix.

It’s important to note that this issue doesn’t seem to involve the physical battery itself. Rather, it appears to be related to how the console calculates and displays remaining battery life—sometimes showing critically low power when there are still several hours left.

Nintendo's first suggested solution is to restart your console into its hidden Recovery Mode. To do this:

  • Power off your Nintendo Switch 2 completely.
  • While powering the console back on, hold down both the volume up (+) and volume down (-) buttons simultaneously.
  • Continue holding these buttons until the Recovery Mode screen loads.

Simply entering this mode may recalibrate the battery indicator and correct the display of remaining charge, according to Nintendo.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, the company has outlined a more detailed calibration process designed to help the system better track battery levels over time. This involves fully charging the device, allowing it to drain nearly completely, and repeating the cycle several times.

Battery Calibration Instructions (If Recovery Mode Doesn't Work)

  1. Make sure your Nintendo Switch 2 has the latest system software update installed.
  2. Set all three Auto-Sleep settings to Never:
    • From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
    • Scroll down and tap Sleep Mode.
    • Change "Auto-Sleep (Playing on System Screen)", "Auto-Sleep (Connected to TV)", and "Auto-Sleep (Playing Media Content)" to Never.
  3. Connect the AC adapter directly to the console.
  4. Allow the console to charge until the battery reaches 100%, or for at least three hours if it reaches full charge sooner.
  5. Leave the console plugged in for an additional hour after reaching 100%.
  6. Unplug the AC adapter and use the console normally until the battery is nearly depleted.
  7. Once the battery is almost empty, power off the console and leave it off for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Repeat this entire process several times.

According to Nintendo, the battery percentage display should gradually improve with each full charge and discharge cycle. If the issue persists even after following these steps, your console may require professional servicing.

While most users may never need to access the Switch 2’s hidden Recovery Mode, it’s good to know such tools exist for troubleshooting. And while you're exploring the console’s lesser-known features, you might enjoy discovering the hidden GameCube startup animations or trying out alternative hacks like using your smartphone as a cost-effective replacement for the official Switch Camera.
