"Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Update: Enhances Backwards Compatibility and More"

The Nintendo Switch 2 is now available in select regions where it’s already June 5, 2025. However, potential buyers should be aware that a day-one system update is required to unlock the console's full functionality—including the ability to play Nintendo Switch 1 games, Virtual Game Cards, online-only titles, and physical Switch 2 software via key cards that require downloading.

This requirement wasn’t entirely unexpected by fans. Early adopters prior to launch had already noted the need for a significant patch before the console could operate smoothly. While most users shouldn't encounter issues with the download, it's important to keep this in mind if you're eager to jump into gameplay immediately after unboxing.

Why does such a major update exist on day one? It’s likely due to last-minute firmware refinements made during the manufacturing process. Additionally, keeping the Switch 2's full capabilities locked behind a day-one update allowed Nintendo to maintain secrecy around gameplay and system features—even as early units surfaced ahead of launch.

Interestingly, the patch notes even note that the console can now officially play games—a surprising but telling detail about how much was still being finalized up until release.

After applying the update, you gain access to a wide range of Nintendo Switch 2 features, including core network functions:

  • Use of Nintendo Switch software
  • Nintendo Switch Online
  • Game Chat
  • Sharing News
  • Data Transfer
  • Virtual Game Cards
  • Nintendo eShop
  • Game News
  • Upload screenshots and videos to the server (viewable via the Nintendo Switch App)

Please note: Most network-based features require a linked Nintendo Account. Additionally, to use Nintendo Switch 2 software provided via key card or to utilize microSD Express storage, the console must be updated to the latest firmware version.

Upon initial setup of your Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll be prompted to download and install the day-one update. Alternatively, attempting to access certain Home menu functions—like the eShop—will also trigger the update prompt automatically.

The flagship title for the console, *Mario Kart World*, has also received a dedicated patch today. The update enables online multiplayer functionality and includes adjustments such as expanded character availability at game start.
