Nintendo Switch 2 VRR Exclusive to Handheld Mode

by Logan May 17,2025

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing about the mention of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished shortly after. Now, Nintendo has stepped up to clarify the situation regarding VRR functionality on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo addressed the confusion: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When pressed about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future firmware update, the company responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that while VRR is available for users playing in handheld mode, those who prefer to play on a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification comes after initial mentions of VRR were spotted and subsequently removed, a process documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.

Although this might be a letdown for those hoping for VRR on the Switch 2's TV settings right away, it's not the end of the road. Sony previously rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles through a post-launch update, suggesting that Nintendo might do the same in the future.

In other news related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has released a list of games that will receive free performance upgrades on the new console, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
