New Power Rangers Live-Action Disney+ Series Reportedly Designed to Reinvent the Franchise for a New Generation of Fans

Power Rangers is reportedly getting a live-action series reboot on Disney+. The Wrap reports that Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in negotiations to write, showrun, and produce the series for Disney+ and 20th Century TV.

Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, aims to revitalize the series for a new generation while retaining the loyalty of existing fans.

The 90s television show, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, captivated a generation with its teenage heroes and their combinable mechs.

Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise, along with other Saban Brands properties, in a $522 million deal in 2018. At the time, Hasbro highlighted the franchise's significant growth potential across various platforms, including toys, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment worldwide. Brian Goldner, Hasbro's then-chairman and CEO, stated, “We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint.”

This move followed the unsuccessful 2017 film reboot, which attempted a grittier approach but ultimately failed to generate sufficient box office revenue, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels and the subsequent sale of the rights.

Hasbro's other notable projects include a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, The Forgotten Realms, currently in development at Netflix; an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also at Netflix; and a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe.
