Released in February, the co-op horror game R.E.P.O. has quickly gained popularity, boasting over 200,000 PC players. But will this chilling experience make its way to consoles? Let's dive in.

Currently, there are no plans for a console release of R.E.P.O., and it may remain a PC exclusive. Developer semiwork hasn't indicated any intention to port the game to consoles. Their current focus is on perfecting the game's multiplayer functionality, a task proving more challenging than anticipated.

The primary hurdle is combating cheating within the multiplayer lobbies. Implementing a robust anti-cheat system presents a significant challenge: it would also prevent the use of community-created mods, a feature semiwork wants to preserve. As the developer explains (via PCGamer), "The main issue with matchmaking lobbies is hackers. But the issue with an anti-cheat system is that you’re ruining the experience for everyone who has made mods, because mods don’t work with an anti-cheat system. And we don’t want that.” This crucial issue needs resolving before any console port can even be considered.

While some PC-only titles, like Mouthwashing, have transitioned to consoles, it's important to note that Mouthwashing is a single-player game, simplifying the porting process considerably. Similarly, Lethal Company and Content Warning, previous titles from semiwork with similar gameplay, remain PC exclusives. Although console ports were considered for Content Warning around this time last year, technical difficulties ultimately prevented it.

Therefore, the answer to whether R.E.P.O. will come to consoles is a definitive "not yet," and possibly never. The developer's current priority is enhancing the PC version's multiplayer experience and addressing the significant challenges posed by cheating and modding compatibility.
