HBO has celebrated the triumph of The Last of Us Season 2, attributing a surge in viewership that has propelled the show's global audience past 90 million viewers since the conclusion of Season 1.
In the United States, the Season 2 finale drew an impressive 3.7 million viewers across various platforms. The premiere episode of Season 2 garnered 5.3 million viewers, indicating a slight decline in viewership from the series' opening to its closing episode. However, Warner Bros. remains optimistic, anticipating a "significant" increase in the audience for the Season 2 finale, attributing the current numbers to the low viewing levels during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
It's important to note that the Season 1 finale achieved a record-breaking 8.2 million viewers, a benchmark that the Season 2 finale has yet to surpass.
On a positive note, Season 2 has maintained a higher average viewership per episode compared to Season 1. With nearly 37 million viewers per episode worldwide, Warner Bros. reports that this number is "growing." For comparison, Season 1 ended with 32 million U.S. cross-platform viewers 90 days after its premiere.IGN's review of the Season 2 finale of The Last of Us awarded it a 6/10, stating, "The Season 2 finale of The Last of Us reaches its agonizing cliffhanger ending at a breakneck speed, disorienting as much as it thrills."
For those looking for more insight, IGN has published a detailed explanation of The Last of Us Season 2 ending, exploring how it sets the stage for Season 3.

Last week, showrunner Craig Mazin hinted at the necessity of a fourth season to fully tell The Last of Us story from the two Naughty Dog video games. In an interview with Collider, Mazin explained that condensing the narrative into Season 3 would be too time-consuming, suggesting that Season 3 might be longer than Season 2. However, he concluded, "there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season." He expressed hope that the series would earn enough support to return for a fourth season, stating, "That’s the most likely outcome."
