Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission unveiled Silent Hill f, a chilling new entry in the beloved horror franchise, transporting players to 1960s Japan.
First announced in 2022, Silent Hill f was described as a game set in a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world. The game's narrative is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed writer behind the Higurashi and Umineko visual novel series.
Now, we have a much clearer picture of Silent Hill f.
Silent Hill f: Finding Beauty in Terror
Konami revealed a new trailer and key details, emphasizing the game's aim to "find the beauty in terror" and present players with a difficult choice within the unsettling beauty of 1960s Japan. While the nature of this choice remains a mystery, the story unfolds around Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life is irrevocably altered when her town is enveloped in fog and undergoes a horrific transformation. Hinkao must navigate this unrecognizable landscape, solving puzzles, battling strange creatures, and ultimately confronting a fateful decision. This original story offers a compelling entry point for newcomers while including Easter eggs to delight series veterans. The game is set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real-world location of Kanayama, Gero, in Gifu Prefecture.
Creature and character designer kera shared insights into the game's horrifying aesthetic: "I love the Silent Hill series, and it's been a big influence on me," Kera stated. "Silent Hill 2, in particular, its wall messages, music, and monster designs, are constantly in my memory. Bringing the setting to Japan required a different approach, a unique feel. The monster designs were the most challenging aspect. I had to consider the series' history and chart a new direction while maintaining the essence of Silent Hill. It might not be the exact same blood-smeared, rusting scenery, but I sincerely hope you'll enjoy our vision and the world we've created."
Music plays a crucial role. Longtime Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (known for the Dynasty Warriors series) are collaborating, crafting soundscapes for the Fog World and Otherworld respectively. Inage described his contribution: "I have composed music for an unsettling yet beautiful world that uses imagery from shrines, blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes. I wove in various techniques that will connect the player to the protagonist's agony, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions."
While a release date is yet to be announced, Silent Hill f is confirmed for release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
