Sony's State of Play Breaks Summer Viewership Record

by Skylar Mar 28,2026

Sony's massive State of Play showcase in June 2025 set a new peak concurrent viewership record for the company.

Sony started the summer gaming reveal season with an impressive lineup, presenting a diverse collection of new games to build excitement ahead of Summer Games Fest week. The event offered glimpses of 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Romeo is a Dead Man, and Silent Hill f.

Streams Charts reported that this week's State of Play reached a peak of over 2.2 million live viewers, the highest in the series' history. Based on the website's compiled data, State of Play now stands as the third most-watched gaming or tech showcase of 2025 by peak concurrent viewership. Only two Nintendo Direct broadcasts attracted larger audiences, with Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal comfortably leading the rankings.

As highlighted by Push Square, the State of Play wasn't Sony's most-watched livestream ever—that title belongs to the PS5 reveal event, which currently has 44 million views. The Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Forbidden Dawn presentations also drew massive audiences, accumulating 15 and 10 million views respectively. Despite this, Tuesday's broadcast remains the most popular State of Play event by a significant margin.

The presentation emphasized third-party developers, particularly Japanese studios, featuring major announcements from Capcom, Grasshopper Manufacture, Konami, ArtPlay, Square Enix, and Team Ninja. Notably, the showcase included very few first-party titles.

The event also appeared geared toward dedicated gaming enthusiasts, with a noticeable concentration of action-oriented games, many of which are expected to carry mature or 18+ ratings.
