Square Enix Unveils Kingdom Hearts 4: Promises to Meet Fan Expectations

by Ellie May 15,2025

Square Enix has once again confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is still in development, dispelling any doubts with a clear and concise message shared on social media, accompanied by a series of captivating images. This announcement comes on the heels of yesterday's news about the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a GPS-based action-RPG for mobile devices. Despite this cancellation, Square Enix reassured fans that the team remains dedicated to the development of Kingdom Hearts 4.

"We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts 4 and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!" the developer stated in their first post, which was accompanied by a collage featuring various screenshots. These images not only introduce some of the characters fans can expect to encounter but also offer a glimpse into the game's cinematics, combat, platforming, and an impressively large enemy.

"We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts," the second post from Square Enix read. "We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience. Thank you for your continued support."

This marks the first official update on the much-anticipated sequel in months, following a tiny, cryptic tease for Kingdom Hearts 4 back in January. Although the game was unveiled in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, Square Enix had remained relatively silent until this recent update.

Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will, after 22 years and 18 games, begin to shift the Kingdom Hearts narrative towards its conclusion.

Regarding the canceled action-RPG Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, Square Enix expressed their "heartfelt apologies to everyone who have been looking forward" to it. The project was canceled because it was "determined that it would be difficult [...] to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time."
