Star Wars Hunters Announces Shut Down Just 9 Months After Launch, Steam Release Appears Scrapped

Zynga, the publisher behind Star Wars Hunters, has announced the game's complete shutdown just nine months after its release. Plans for a PC version on Steam have also been scrapped.

The free-to-play team-based battle arena game, developed by NaturalMotion, launched on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android in June 2024. IGN's review gave the game a 7/10, noting its enjoyable but ultimately short-lived appeal. This proved prescient, as Zynga cited careful consideration in its decision to end support. The final content update will be released on April 15th, with servers shutting down on October 1st, 2025.

Zynga assures players that this decision wasn't taken lightly and emphasizes their commitment to providing updates throughout the transition. Here's the plan:

• March 25th: Season 5 is extended by three weeks, including events, shop bundles, and the Ranked Season, allowing players more time to reach Kyber 1 rank.
• April 15th: The final content update, including the new Support Hunter Tuya and additional in-game content, is released. In-app purchases will be disabled. A final Ranked Mode leaderboard will remain active.
• October 1st: Online servers are shut down, ending gameplay.

The announcement makes no mention of the planned PC version, and the game's Steam page now indicates it's unavailable. This marks the end of Zynga's first foray into PC game publishing, a venture announced with much fanfare last November. The company, known for mobile titles like FarmVille, Words with Friends, and CSR Racing, had hoped Star Wars Hunters would be a successful expansion into console and PC markets.

Despite this setback, numerous Star Wars games remain in development, including Respawn Entertainment's third Star Wars Jedi title and Bit Reactor's upcoming turn-based tactics game, slated for a reveal at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
