Exciting news for fans of the action-packed game Stellar Blade: developer Shift Up has officially announced that a fully-fledged sequel is in the works. The original title, published by PlayStation, made its debut in April 2024 and was met with a warm reception. Gamers praised its unique blend of gameplay elements reminiscent of both NieR: Automata and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Shift Up, the Korean company behind the game, shared this update through a chart outlining their future projects as part of their latest financial results. The chart, which was made public today, indicates that the Stellar Blade sequel is next in line for development and is slated for release before 2027.
Before diving into the sequel, Shift Up plans a "platform expansion" for Stellar Blade. This move is likely aimed at the game's upcoming PC version, scheduled to launch on June 11, 2025. Additionally, during this period, Shift Up will also be working on another project dubbed Project Witches, a multiplatform action RPG that remains shrouded in mystery but promises to be a significant addition to their portfolio.
Earlier this week, Shift Up addressed a PC region lock issue affecting Stellar Blade, stating they are in close discussions with Sony to resolve the problem, which had caused the game's store page to be blocked on Steam in over 100 countries.
In our review at IGN, we described Stellar Blade as "a gorgeous and well-crafted action game with very impressive strengths and very clear weaknesses." While the game's narrative and characters were found lacking in depth, and some RPG elements such as sidequests were criticized for their repetitive nature, the game's combat system shone brightly. Drawing inspiration from Sekiro, it provided solid mechanics, challenging enemies, and rewarding exploration, making up for the game's shortcomings in other areas.
