James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently in development, revealing it's "being written right now."
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming release of Superman, DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared that this new Wonder Woman film is being developed independently from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.
"We're working on Wonder Woman,” Gunn stated. “Wonder Woman's being written right now."

Beyond the comics, Diana Prince has faced a number of setbacks in recent years. Her live-action film franchise starring Gal Gadot lost momentum after the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984. She has never had her own animated series, and her first-ever solo video game was cancelled despite being announced back in 2021.
As IGN writer Carlos Morales recently noted, "At the peak of the rivalry between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU in the late 2010s, the original Wonder Woman film stood out as one of the DCEU’s biggest triumphs. The 2017 movie earned widespread acclaim and grossed over $800 million globally. Following the divisive reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Patty Jenkins’ vision for Diana resonated with audiences in a way few other DC films had. However, the 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, fell short of expectations, receiving mixed reviews and ultimately failing to recoup its theatrical budget."
The film was released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters due to pandemic-related hesitancy among moviegoers.
Although a third installment was initially in development, the project eventually stalled, and no further news emerged—until now. Naturally, with the announcement of a new Wonder Woman movie, speculation about who will portray Diana is sure to resurface.
Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, marking the start of Gunn's reimagined DC Universe (DCU). It takes place before Peacemaker Season 2, which debuts on HBO Max August 21, 2025. Supergirl is set for a June 26, 2026 release, though no official date has been given for the Lanterns TV series.
Other DCU titles currently in development include Clayface, scheduled for a September 11, 2026 release. Meanwhile, the DCU film The Authority appears to be facing challenges. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a Peacemaker spinoff, “has had a couple of setbacks, frankly.” On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold “is going pretty strong,” while Paradise Lost remains “slow moving, but it's moving.”
