Zach Braff Joins Cast for Scrubs Reboot

by Olivia May 23,2025

In the world of television, nothing good ever stays dead for long—and 2024 is proving no exception. From the revival of iconic universes like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the beloved 2000s hospital sitcom Scrubs is the latest to make a comeback. It's been 24 years since Zach Braff first donned the scrubs as junior doctor JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, and now, fans are thrilled to learn that Braff has agreed to reprise his iconic role in ABC's upcoming reboot of the series. This new iteration of Scrubs is set to blend a mix of familiar faces with fresh new talent.

This isn't the first time ABC has attempted to breathe new life into the Scrubs universe. Back in its ninth season, the network introduced a new, younger cast alongside Braff and other original series regulars, but the experiment was short-lived, lasting only nine episodes. Now, nearly two decades later, ABC is giving it another shot, with the original creator Bill Lawrence at the helm. Lawrence envisions the project as a unique blend of a reboot and revival, aiming to capture the essence of what made Scrubs a hit while introducing new elements.

Lawrence himself has expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the dual appeal of revisiting beloved characters in the modern medical landscape and introducing a new generation of idealistic young doctors to the Sacred Heart Hospital.

"We've been talking about this a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo," Lawrence shared with Deadline. "A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling."

Originally airing 182 episodes between 2001 and 2010, Scrubs left an indelible mark on television comedy. While there's no confirmed start date for filming the new episodes, anticipation is high among fans eager to return to the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital.
