In these puzzles, players fill or leave blank cells in a grid based on numbers provided at the grid's edges, unveiling a hidden image. These numbers serve as clues, indicating the lengths of continuous lines of filled squares in each row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" suggests sequences of four, eight, and three filled squares, separated by at least one blank cell.

Solving a nonogram requires identifying which cells should be filled (boxes) and which should remain empty (spaces). Marking spaces accurately is as crucial as filling boxes, as spaces later help in determining the placement of continuous blocks of boxes. Solvers often use dots or crosses to mark cells they are sure should be left empty.
