Capcom had indeed explored the idea of creating an open-world, online Resident Evil game before ultimately scrapping the project. This concept emerged during the mid-2010s, around the same time the company was re-evaluating its long-standing Resident Evil franchise and experimenting with new directions. The idea was to move away from the traditional linear, survival horror format that defined earlier entries in the series. Instead, Capcom reportedly considered developing a large-scale, open-world Resident Evil experience built around multiplayer online elements—potentially blending co-op gameplay, persistent world mechanics, and deeper player progression. The goal was to tap into the growing popularity of online and multiplayer-focused games, such as The Division or Destiny, while still maintaining the core horror and bio-terror themes of Resident Evil. However, despite initial development and concept work, the project was eventually shelved. Capcom ultimately concluded that the open-world, online model didn’t align well with the franchise’s identity—particularly its emphasis on tension, atmosphere, and narrative-driven scares. The studio felt that a sprawling open world might dilute the fear and dread central to the series’ success. Instead, Capcom returned to its roots with Resident Evil Village (2021), a more traditional, story-driven experience, and later announced a reimagined Resident Evil 4 (2023) that leaned into refined gameplay and modernized mechanics while preserving the franchise’s classic feel. In interviews, Capcom executives including Producer Jun Takeuchi and Director Hideki Kamiya have hinted at these abandoned plans, acknowledging the creative ambition but reaffirming that the franchise’s soul lies in its intense, intimate horror experiences—not massive online worlds. So while the open-world, online Resident Evil was a real, explored concept, it was ultimately scrapped because it didn’t serve the core identity of the series. Capcom chose to preserve the franchise’s legacy over chasing a trend.
