Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian checkers, played on an 8×8 board, the rules are straightforward yet require strategic thinking. Here's what you need to know:
- White initiates the game
- Checkers can only move on dark squares
- Capturing an opponent's checker is mandatory when possible
- Captures are allowed both forward and backward
- Kings can move and capture along any diagonal
- The Turkish strike rule applies, allowing only one capture per move
- Players can choose any capture option if multiple are available
- A checker reaching the opponent's edge becomes a king and can immediately move as a king if possible
A draw is declared under the following conditions:
- If a player with checkers and three or more kings faces one opponent's king and fails to capture it within 15 moves
- If both players have kings and the position remains unchanged for 30 moves in 4-5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6-7 piece endings
- If a player with three checkers (in any combination) cannot capture an opponent's king on the "high road" within 5 moves
- If only kings are moved for 15 consecutive moves without capturing or promoting a checker
- If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player to move
International Checkers 10×10
International checkers, played on a 10×10 board, adds an extra layer of complexity and strategy. Here are the key rules:
- White starts the game
- Checkers move exclusively on dark squares
- Capturing an opponent's checker is mandatory when possible
- Captures can be made both forward and backward
- Kings can move and capture along any diagonal
- The Turkish strike rule applies, allowing only one capture per move
- The majority rule requires capturing the largest number of checkers if multiple options exist
- A simple checker can continue capturing after reaching the opponent's edge without becoming a king
- A simple checker becomes a king upon reaching the opponent's edge and stops, resuming as a king on the next move
