Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners seated opposite each other, 29 uses a trimmed 32-card deck from the standard 52-card pack. This deck features eight cards in each of the traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The cards rank from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks containing valuable cards and accumulate points.

Here's how the points are distributed:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This setup yields a total of 28 points from the cards. In some versions, an additional point is awarded for the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points—hence the name. However, many players today do not count this extra point, yet the game remains known as 29, even in the 28-point variation.

Traditionally, the discarded Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives from the full 52-card deck serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one of each suit. Meanwhile, the Sixes are employed for scoring, with each partnership using one red and one black Six.
