Collision Investigation Made Easier with CrashScan: EDR "Black Box" Data Analysis

Investigating vehicle collisions just got significantly easier. The CrashScan app, used in conjunction with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows collision investigators to access and interpret data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "black box," where supported. This powerful tool helps validate insurance claims and provides crucial insights into liability.

Vehicle Compatibility:

CrashScan supports over 3000 vehicle year/make/model combinations globally. Check compatibility here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/

Comprehensive Accident Reports:

Successful CrashScan reports offer detailed information about the collision, including:

  • Impact severity (minor, moderate, severe)
  • Impact direction (front, rear, side)
  • EDR trigger thresholds
  • Pre-crash data (5 seconds of speed, brake/accelerator pedal use, steering input)
  • Occupant count and seatbelt usage
  • Estimated repair costs
  • Likelihood of structural damage
  • Injury risk assessment (whiplash, injury duration)
  • Contextual g-force comparisons to daily activities

Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration data, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Legal Considerations (EDR Data):

  • Canada: No specific legislation; data is considered diagnostic and non-private, although insurer consent is best practice.
  • United States: The Driver Privacy Act of 2015 and legislation in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) regulate EDR data access, generally requiring vehicle owner/policyholder consent.

End-User Consent:

By installing the CrashScan app, you agree to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in the privacy statement. Uninstall the app to withdraw consent. For more information, visit CollisionSciences.ca.
