Dictation is a fundamental technique in language teaching and testing. It involves a passage being read aloud to learners, who must then write down what they hear as accurately as possible. This method is incredibly beneficial for honing your listening capabilities.

You can use various listening sources to practice, including videos, audio recordings, and podcasts that feature native speakers with either English-British or English-American accents. Choose topics that are easier to listen to, such as education, environment, work, school subjects, or even exam-specific content like IELTS, TOEIC, and TOEFL.

Step 1 - Start Listening

Begin by selecting a suitable time to pause your video based on your listening ability. For instance, after hearing a sentence of about 5-10 words, stop the video and jot down what you've heard. Continue this process until the end of the listening material. To further enhance your skills, listen to the content 1-2 more times.

Step 2 - Compare the Transcript with Your Dictation

After completing about three rounds of listening, compare your notes with the transcript. Correct any mistakes and fill in any gaps you may have left. This comparison will help you pinpoint common errors and improve your performance in real tests.
