The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, was announced at The Game Awards, sparking much excitement among fans. While details remain scarce, recent interviews shed some light on the project.
IGN confirmed with Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi that this is indeed a direct sequel to the original Ōkami, continuing the story from where the first game left off. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at the return of Amaterasu, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
While fans anticipated Amaterasu's return, the existence of Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS sequel starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, complicates matters. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its DS platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied fan reception, emphasizing that the new sequel directly continues the original Ōkami's storyline.
The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, showing Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey. This offers ample opportunity for new challenges and adventures.
However, those eager for more details will have to wait. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by their excitement. As Hirabayashi stated, further updates will likely be some time coming.
